Writing text directly to video memory

I am writing a ASCII console game and I want to do a sort of double-buffering with the text. Currently I'm getting a bit of tearing and I want to get rid of that. So, is there anyway to write the text directly to the video buffer and then "blt" it to the screen. Or, how would I sync the drawing of the ASCII with the VBI (Vertical blank interval) of a monitor?
