RPG: conversation trees & relationships

I''ve always liked typing in for conversations. But, I''ve always hated playing guess the word. Zork was what 15 years ago? Why haven''t we progressed any further than where Zork was at?

I know it''s not a simple thing, not by a long shot. But would someone from back then think the 3d stuff that''s out there now was possible? At first it was done and done badly. In time it got better. Flashy graphics is always easy to notice right away so it got all the attention. Now maybe we should take time to focus on the conversation stuff.

Taking another look at MegaHAL, I still think it''s useless for a game like this. The responses are so unrealistic that it will jolt the player out of whatever suspension of disbelief that they may have. Better that the NPCs say little, but it sounds good, than they say lots where most of it is gibberish.
