Question about DirectInput mouse control

I''m messing around with DirectInput, receiving keyboard and mouse messages. When I get a device state for either the keyboard or mouse buttons, and print appropriate text through D3D, it works fine. However, whenever I try to get a device state for mouse movement, it works ok as long as I don''t update the position by printing a text location through D3D. If I try to print out the position, it ends up crashing the whole app.. can anyone help me out and let me know what I''m doing wrong?
