A good example of terrain rendering using quads

Are there any good demos out there for DirectX 8 that deal with simple terrain rendering using quads? It doesn''t need to be a fancy ROAM algorithm. In fact, the simpler the better. Something that will use a bmp file for a height map. I get the impression that quads can give better performance than triangles, especially for terrain. Is this a reasonable assumpion? Anyway, I''d like to learn more on using quads, and this seems like a good way to do it. Value of good ideas: 10 cents per dozen. Implementation of the good ideas: Priceless.
