Optimizing for Intel and AMD processors

Recommended Posts

I have a question about the rules of optimization for AMD processors. Does AMD have the same pairing/branch prediction/opcodes rules for its processors as intel? Or optimizing for Pentium Pro will lead to the code running slowly on Athlon? Also does Athlon have the same instruction set as Pentium Pro? (including floating point instructions). Thanks.

The Athlon does not have the same branch prediction hardware as the Pentium, although you wouldn''t typically optimize in that direction by hand (that''s a job for the compiler people).

Both the Athlon and the Pentium Pro are x86 instruction set compatible but their instruction sets are not the same.
