Does anyone know if there is a way to gather information about a users computer system and put it into a text file? I''ve created a computer game that will not initialise Direct X 8 on some PC''s and I''m trying to find out if there is a pattern (yes the PC''s DO have Direct X installed )

Get the user to go to the Run... option from the start menu and type "DXDIAG".

That is the Microsoft DirectX diagnostic tool.

Tell them to go to the "Display" tab and try the DirectDraw and Direct3D tests.

At the bottom of DXDIAG, there is a button marked "Save All Information...", after they''ve run the above tests, get them to press that - it will then generate a text file with a full analysis of the DirectX version, hardware profile, drivers etc on their system.

What it won''t do however is give you the device caps - but that''s your job, and something a properly written app should be checking anyway...

You can get information about the system with the Win32 API. Ho to : http://msdn.microsoft.com/library and search for keywords like Get***** or check in the sections. You will find a lot of things.
