if i wanted to make an overlay graphic for my game (e.g. a console, or a minimap or something), how would i go about doing that? im reading that the two possibilities are two render a triangle strip using orthographic camera, or use the d3dxsprite interface; which is better?

You could use D3DXSprite to keep it simple. But if you use a triangle list you can create a lot of extra effects. For exaple you could give a console a reflection effect by using multitexturing. Or you could add lighting to you're console. You could even transform the console in 3D if the console pops up or is to be closed. I think speed is not an issue here because a single sprite or a simple traingle primitive are both rendered damned fast!
