video for windows codec conversion

Recommended Posts

Hi all, I''m trying to convert some of my avi files so that I can use them for games. However, they were taken by my webcam back when I had Windows 98 on my computer, and it encoded them in Video for Windows format. Now, I have Windows ME (soon to be upgraded to XP), and it won''t play back the video or encode the file since it is in a non-DirectShow compatible format, can anyone give me some advice on what I can do? Thanks Lucas

umm, there is no directshow format. directshow is a subsystem of directx that allows the playback of mulitmedia content. it should be able to playback yoru webcam videos provided you used a standard codec (indeo, divx 4.11 (almost stanard heh), wmv8, etc). avi supports many different codecs. you may have used a codec that was designed with the webcam adn thus requires you to install the webcam software on the target machine to get the codec. then you should convert everything to something more standard. you may consider getting virtual dub for this task.
