[java] Anyone going to JavaOne?

Just curious. I've gotten screwed out of going for the last 2 years, so this year I'm raising quite a stink and things are looking good. They have a couple of sessions on the game profile and one on building a multiplayer game that looks cool. So what's the GameDev attendance going to be like? I went last year for the first time. It was amazing. I''ve put in a request to go this year but haven''t heard an answer yet.

Hopefully I''ll hear something soon because I really want to go again.

Also, if you do go, make sure you get to the IONA booth real early to get tickets for their party. It is the coolest party you will ever see. Last year they had Spinal Tap, a burlesque show with massages, some weird freak show (I only caught the chick dancing with the Python), free booze and tonnes of food.

Nobody else? Damn, I was hoping I would get to meet some of you guys (or at least not get stuck hanging out with a bunch of IT heads).

I''m still waiting to get my approval to go. With the Canadian exchange it works out to be really pricy. Last year overall it was about $6000 by the time it was done with and my bar bill came in.

Well looks like it''s (maybe) you and me borngamer.

I''m really looking foward to this. I turn 21 a month and a day before the confrence (same day you registered on, I smell conspiracy), so I will most definately be hitting up every party/bar/fest I can .

Well if I get to go again this year I''ll drag you off to the Iona party for sure. Last year after more than a few drinks I found myself tied to a bed with 4 chics on me. It was a whole pile of fun. Of course, don''t tell my wife I said that ok.

Seriously, the conference itself is so impressive you won''t believe it. I went to the Perl conference the year before and almost totally gave up on conferences. But the JavaOne is the conference to end all conferences (in my limited opinion that is).

Everyone has a blast. The sessions are incredibly informative (I really got an appreciation for Java''s power last year). The vendors are great (although it makes you wonder how much those hotties running the booths with the tight T-shirts really know about software. I''m sure they are all qualified Software Specialists )

As far as hotels go, try to get into the Argent. It''s the closest hotel to the conference and many of the parties are there.

Last year they also had a B-52''s concert for everyone (it was late in the week and I was too wasted to make it). Hopefully this year they will have someone good (pleeease let it be Bif Naked).

Anyways, if I don''t get to go, you have a good time. I''ll hopefully find out in the next week or so. After all, it''s next month.

I famous!!! Well not really. But my picture is in the JavaOne Conference brochure for this year.

That''s right, if you flip to page 9 I am dead center on the page.

You the guy in the white shorts?

Nope. If you look on page 9 (It''s the pic of the Pavillion), I''m directly on the bottom center of the page in the greenish shirt and light pants.

You can only see my back and the side of my head.

Of course, the number of times I went into the Pavillion I was bound to get a picture taken. I loved it in there. Every chance I got I was checking out the different booths. And every time I went in I found a new one I didn''t see the time before.

I''m still waiting for approval. But at least they haven''t said no yet. Unfortunately we just had 2 guys quit this week which leaves me as the only developer in my area. Hopefully they can live without me for a week.

Ok, I see ya.

Quick question, does the Argent (or the confrence) have any sort of internet access you can plug into (beyond just a phone line)? I''m supposed to keep in touch with the folks at work via email, and I''d like to set up a dialup account before I go if I''m going to need it.

You''ll be happy to know (maybe), that Sun sets up a few sections of computers (Sun Workstations of course) that you can use to get on the net and check your email.

Don''t be looking for any fast speeds or anything. But you can get online. The Argent also has a room full of PC''s that you can have Unreal Tournament bouts with other conference members.

Be warned though. There are a crap load of distractions at the conference that might stop you from making it to any sessions. Try to keep focused and don''t look at any of the following:

1. The wall of Playstations. This was cool.. TV''s from the floor to the cieling of Playstation 2''s. Play as much as you want.

2. The arcade of classic games. Pinball, PacMan, 1942, etc... Of course they haven''t been maintained since the 80''s.

3. Pool and Air Hockey.

4. All day movies playing on a projection screen.

5. The street performers and Harley''s carrying Java flags circling the building all day.

I think that covers the big distractions. But I''m sure there were more I didn''t see last year.

P.S. I''m still waiting on my approval but it''s looking like a 50/50 chance right now.

Ok, I just got the approval for JavaOne so it looks like I'll be there.

WayfarerX, if you want to hook up during the conference send me an email (it's on my profile) and we can figure out who's going to be where and when.

Yeah! This is my first time in SF so I'm really glad there will be someone I at least kind of know. I'll be in touch.

Only 6 days left until JavaOne!!!!

Is anyone else besides WayfarerX and myself going? If so we all need to hook up for the Iona and Borland parties. They are going to be a blast.

I''m not sure what Iona''s theme is going to be this year, but Borland is doing some sort of Austin Powers themed party. It should be pretty cool.

Free Food! Free Beer! And the wife and kid are on the other side of the country for a week! That''s when you know life is good.
