Try http://www.sunlightd.com/Windows/DirectX.NET/ - their approach does use Managed C++ tho.

Has anyone done any kind of speed comparison between the C# and C++? I''m wondering how much overhead there is in the CLR to COM wrapper.

There are a lot of benefits to coding in C#, and it the speed was anywhere close, it would probably be worth it.
