OpenGL opengl font rendering

Hi, i have a little problem i got some code to write textured text under opengl but it is very slow, does anyone know the fastes way to render text in opengl ? or can you point me to some tutorial or code ? thanks

try in nehe.gamedev.net There are some font toturials that use
Windows font set or load font set from a TGA- file

from a texture is quickest check www.opengl.org there is a document describing most methods of texturing
