Help with Time?

Im trying to figure out how I could program a clock to simulate time so that I can make the days go by. But its got me confused. I was hopeing someone could give me a few hints to send me on my way?

for one, programs dont run when the computer is turned off...
the only way to make any clock is to reference a clock/timer built into ur comp.
