Beginner Info for terrain systems

I just finished building a particle system and i would like to move onto making a terrain system. I know almost nothing about advanced terrain systems, so I hope someone can point me in the right direction, so that I can get started. I program in OpenGL, and some source in ogl would certainly help. Most of the stuff I have been looking at is too advanced for me at this point, so I am hoping someone can demystify all the info for me. Any suggestions? Books? Papers? Websites? Whats the most common for of terrain? Thanks

i advise u not to ge tinto terrains if all uve done in opengl is particles

search in the forum for terrain and ull c
make something more simpler like a clone of asteroids
its a lot harder then u think
