How bad is it if I dont free/delete/release my COM objects and surfaces? Doesn''t the OS keep track of this stuff so I can be extremely lazy or should I get up off my booty and start using good programming techniques? Senses

I''d say "get up off your booty and start using good programming techniques"...

The OS and DirectX will attempt to clean up any memory that *they* own when your process exits.

Unfortunately this doesn''t always include memory which the *device driver* (the stuff written by the manufacturer of your graphics/input/sound/etc hardware) owns!

Sometimes you won''t have any problems.

Sometimes not releasing your objects will slowly chew up memory since the driver isn''t releasing it properly ending in a crash.

Sometimes this will make the next application which uses DirectX fail/do weird stuff.
