The 3Dfx card supports two types of depth buffering, fixed point (Z-buffering) and floating point (3Dfx calls it "W"-buffering). Out of the two, W-buffering is both faster and less prone to aliasing due to precision problems, so it is preferred over Z.

umm, some nivida cards support this as well. so do some ati cards. though i am not sure to how recent the cards go back that support this feature. as always check your docs and hardware.
