SDL & Alpha Blending

i can get AlphaBlending to work with SDL, but is there a good way to change the alpha blending setting every frame? The way i have to do it now, i have to call SDL_DisplayFormat() every time i call the SDL_SetAlpha(). Is there a way around this? I found one way, and that was to not convert the surface to the display format at all, but that makes things really, really, really slow. Any Suggestions?
