I want to make my particles flow around the screen and then line themselves up in the centre of the screen in a shape or something. Unfortunately, all the tutorials i''ve seen use particles for snow or smoke and I can''t seem to get my head around doing what I want. Any help would be great!

Create the pattern you want to be created as a b/w texture or something similar, assign your particles to the white points in the texture, get the world coordinates of the point your particle is assigned to and use it as a source of gravity for all particles assigned to this points.
This way all particles fly towards the points they''re assigned to and will form the created pattern.
You''ll have to find a way to adjust the gravity so that the particles don''t fly around the points but stay there, but I''ll leave that up to you.

I hope you understand what I mean, my thought are somewhat weird at the moment.

Ok, that''s a good idea about getting them to form the shape, but what about the swirling around the screen on a predefined path. I want the particles to kinda fly around a central point on the screen in and out and round and round etc, then after a while, converge onto the shape...

Thanks for the idea though doener

Why not use some type of splines, then you can make any pattern you want, and they will follow it, just update it for each point. I use CatmullRom splines, work pretty well.
