Obvious texture question

I''m just picking up this D3D stuff so if i''m way off base with this you know why.

The max texture size of Voodoo 3 cards was/is 256x256 and that was considered a bit on the small side, so as long as you write your code so that it will run fine with 256x256 textures then most hardware shouldn''t have a problme with it.

For the record my ageing GeForce (original flavour) supports 2096x2096 textures so it looks like most older hardware will be more than happy with the 256x256 max texture size that the program would need.

The texture size is the size of a texture surface. a 512x512 surface will take up the same number of pixels as a 1x1 texture on a triangle, but the higher the texture size, the more detail you get. Think of the windows desktop: a 1600x1200 resoloution takes up the same space on your monitor as a 640x400 resoloution (i.e. the monitor doesn''t shrink), but at 1600x1200, you can get more detail in.
