I''m trying to start writing a RPG with 3D objects and characters that move around in a Tile Based world. I was wondering if anyone has tried something like this and if they have any suggestions or tips? Also, has anyone found a really good resource on the steps to making a 3D engine or 3D editor? The best one I have so far is one from flipcode.com and it''s based on FPS/portal. Thanks Paul

Using a tile-based world for 3D is really good as the geometry of the tiles lends itself to very simple space partitioning algorithms. For example, using square or diamond tiles, you essentially have a binary space partition already there for you, once you work out how to interpret it. Similarly, it is trivial to break such a map down to a quadtree, speeding up many calculations.
