Lighting or Texture Mapping Effects

I was wondering if anyone here knew how Gran Turismo 3 made it''s cars shiny. I know of cube and square environment mapping, but did they use a special lighting engine or what?

Probably a combination of either point or directional lights, a sphere or cube map dynamically rendered based on the ars environment. Possibly even without the dynamic generation (cars move so fast can you tell if envirinment map is inaccurate?)
