SetTextureStageState and No Texture

What I''m wondering is if I were to set texture states before I set the texture for example Device->SetTextureStageState(D3DTSS_COLOROP,D3DTOP_MODULATE2X); Device->SetTextureStageState(D3DTSS_ALPHAOP,D3DTOP_SELECTARG2); Device->SetTexture(0,SomeTexture); Would the texture state changes I made still be affective? So basicly are texture states a global thing or a pertexture basis?
