What DirectX Version?
Hi,
I''m currently using DirectDraw7 for my graphics needs of the game I am writing. I am about to add sound and input (using the DirectX libraries for each) and am not sure which version to use.
Are the DirectInput/DirectAudio and DirectSound components significantly different between DirectX versions 7 and 8?
DirectInput seems to be pretty similar, but DirectSound looks quite a different beast in version 8, inc. the ability to load wavs which looks nice...
Basically, what I''d like to know is are there any significant improvements in either of the above 2 apis to warrant me requiring DirectX8 from the end user?
Thanks for your advice,
Russ
Use DirectX7 APi''s for both audio and input. The DX7 interfaces are much less complicated and are compatible with the majority of devices. If u were to code 3D games then use DX8.
There isnt much difference between DInput 7 and 8.
DirectSound 8 has extra 3D positional effects - useless for 2D games.

DirectInput 8 adds "action mapping". Look it up in the docs and see if you want to use it.
