vertex array and per face normals

Is it possible? I know that vertex arrays and per vertex normals works perfectly, but I dont see how to do it with per face normals. The problem is that when dealing with per face normals, a single vertex can have as many as 6 different normal (using triangle strips), and as I understand it, vertex array & normal array require a one on one relation between the two.

not possible with triangle/qyad strips or fans but posible with quads or tris
