Advantages of .3ds over .asc?

For 3D studio or for 3D game meshes.
I would say for a typical game mesh use a custom format or somthing like quake .md2. 3ds contains way too much information for a game engine (unless you own a cray with real time rendering of 1m+ polygons a frame (I wish!)).

if you want something clear and easy to use then try the ASE or ASC format (I used it in my first 3D engine ;-) because of its ASCII format). On the other hand, if your choice is size and total compatibility with 3DSMAX features then use 3DS format.
