bezier curves and stuff

I made something that goes through all points specified by: using point that last curve finished at, and the gradient at that point and two other points. Thing is If I have a big map, I want to be able to generate points in the middle without ahaving to store all the polynomials for each patch or walk al the way tacross ther map. So how can I get patces that fit nicely together without having to the gradioents of previous patches. I also want the curves to go through all points so don''t mention horrible spline things with millions of control points - I just feed in a 2d array of heights and it works with them. Ideally only that array is stored in memory as the map. Cheers
