I need info on developing for gamepad controllers

Hello, I'm currently building a 3D "layer" on top of a simulation program I've written. What is required (code, hardware, debugging concerns, etc.) for including the functionality to control camera movements with a game-pad in a DirectX environment? I'm would like to incorporate a Thrustmaster Dual Analog (or similar) and I am working in VC++ and DirectX 8.1. Any info, from tricks to recommended reading, would be greatly appreciated.
