Is it possible to read/write to files through Javascript?
No. It isn''t permitted by the spec (last time I checked).

Short Answer: No.
Long Answer: Yes, in IE through some sort of Java thingy (which you can access in java-script). Microsoft may have removed it, it was a huge security hole waiting to be exploited (it was next to undocumented, I don''t know where I read about it anymore). Maybe they just removed writing support or made it ask permission though? My advice is not to use it. Cookies are about as good as it gets.

Long Answer Part 2:
In Netscape 4.x using a signed script and live connect calls to java this was possible. It was also possible to roll your own certificate of authority for local usage. Don''t know if the functionality exists in NS 6.
