You''re best bet is the book by Jim Adams, Programming Role-Playing Games. It''s nr 15 in the top DirectX books here on gamedev! I have the book, and it''s GREAT!!! It teaches you how to do a 2D engine, a 3D engine and a 2D/3D engine! With everything a RPG game needs! Battlesystems and everything.
I''m loving this book!!!

And then...
quote:preferably a RPG
Bad idea.
quote:a 3d rpg
Really bad idea.
An RPG is generally one of the hardest games to create because of the depth, complexity, and sheer time investment required. Additionally, 3D technology is not simple stuff.
It''s great that you want to make something like that, but for a first game programming project, it''s way too ambitious.
If you''re new to programming in general, do yourself a favor and forget about making games for a little while while you study up on the basics of programming. If you can program decently, and want to start with games, try remaking an arcade game like Space Invaders or Pong.
As far as game programming books are concerned, I think Andre LaMothe''s books are pretty good. As far as general programming books are concerned, the best one I''ve read was called "C Primer Plus". It''s C, not C++, but (in my opinion), that''s a better place to start.
There are a lot of really great articles here are GameDev, too.
