GL4java and object selection with the mouse for 3d objects

Hello, I was wondering if anybody could help...I am currently trying to select objects in my applet with the left mouse button, the problem i''m having is that i''m not entirely sure what to be using for the object selection method that will be called from the mouse input in order to produce a ''hit''. I''ve got the OpenGL superbible book and i''m currently tring to convert the example (beginning chapter 14) that they''ve got in C...But not having much luck. I''d gladly appreciate any help or ideas, or if anyone knows of a better resource than the demo package from jausoft that would be ideal....unfortunately my grasp of languages other than java is very limited. Thanks again, Mark.
