Lightmap generation

Hi there I am developing a graphics engine and I need to develop a utility to generate lightmaps based on complex lighting models. I need to be able to place a large number of multicolored lights and generate lightmaps for objects which are made of up multiple polygons and a single UV mapping for the lightmap. I am assuming that radiosity rendering would be the place to start. Is this a good idea? I am looking for any good links or references where I could begin to learn how to do this. My knowledge of the mathematics of light is very slim to none at the moment Any help would be great Thanks, Geek

I found the section about lighting from CG: principles and practice to be a good introduction.
