Real-time Movie Scene Scripting

Hello, It has always been common place to use a real-time engines to render a scripted scene. The question is what tools most game companies use to go about making those scripts? It is one thing to hand script a character walking across a room and talking to someone, but it is something else to do things like they are doing in Xenosaga (yea, I know it is pre-recorded, but it is still using their own engine). Has anyone here used something like Max to create a complicated scene and had their own engine use the data to make a presentation? Just curious if anyone knows of any pros and cons. Especially when setting up things like camera paths. Thanks!
