I JUST solved this myself. The example that comes with the directx SDK is called "Pick" that shows you how to convert the 2d mouse coordinates into a vector that can be used to select an object that has not had it''s world coordinates changed. so it takes into consideration the viewing and projection matrices but not the world. if you goto there is a great example on how to apply the world matrix to what that "Pick" example gives you.
