Who should do the animation?

this depends on the animation

e.g. ship on water should be simulated with some physic, this should be done by the programmer. but if you not need exact simulations or do not have enougt programmers, this should be done be an artist/modeller... or who ever....

If you are talking about animaiton in 3d game engines then the programmer must create tools that allow artist/animators to create animaitons that are compatible with the game engine.

Most 3d applications have the tools for creating animations, but these animation may or may not import into a game engine as easily as model geometry and textures.

try max script alows max to convert into 3D engine ,if you read a few months ago on here.

its good to let programmer know what you intend to exspfress
so you both are working on the same path.

any way ............... you must be a bad animator to need a programmer.....

a animation is a sequins played at a set time

For some styles of animation, the artist is enough, but for real and complex animation, the programmers made almost all works!.


Really, a animation is not necesary a "lot of frames".. is far of this. Think about quake3.. they use the ugly method "mesh-animation" (such 3dsmax), but now think about Mario64, it use a more complex method plus more kinetic movement, phisycs and more math functions.
