3D Studio Max bone exporting

Hello I am just learning about skeletal animation with bones and vertex blending. I would like to be able to create skeletal-based meshes and animations in 3D Studio MAX and export the bones and which bones are influential for each vertex. I don''t need all of the IK parameters just the bones and weighs if that is available. I know how to create export plugins for MAX with vertex and texture data but I am not sure about the animation stuff yet. Any links, references or thoughts on this would be great. Thanks
