pausing and ignoring input

is there any other way to pause and ignore input other than system("PAUSE"); ? I tried using getch() but it waits for enter to be pressed before continuing. If there is no other function like system("PAUSE"); how can I make my own to do the same... my goal is to pause and ignore one character no matter what it is (enter, number, letter, escape, etc).
