2d-tile engines

Hi i was wondering if anyone could direct me to a website that will help me make or show me things usefull towards this so i can learn in order for me to make a 2d-tile engine that i can edit the full Game from such as item properties, armor power, enemy placement and other good stuff like that. BTW i dont want isometric

for shame, cadesh!

Isometric Land is not just for isometric tile based games. Since there is such a large overlap of information between rectangular tiles, isometric tiles, and hexagonal tiles, it is for all of these things, as well as ortho-projections.
the methodologies for dealing with these things have much in common.
