OpenGL Problem with font example (8-2) in OpenGL programming Guild 3rd ed. (red book)

Hi I was rendering some text in my 3d program using the method provided in the OpenGL Programming Guild 3rd ed. along with the nehe opengl base code. The text renders fine in windowed mode, but in fullscreen it flickers and there is garbage that flicks on and off the screen. This problem didn''t occur till i installed a new radeon 7000 the other day. My program works fine with a tnt2 machine and it worked fine when i had a voodoo4 also I ran a demo using glut3.7 and the font example from the book and it works fine in fullscreen. Could it be the ati drivers? or maybe something in the nehe basecode? Any ideas? anybody else experince this problem? thanks.
