Myself and a few other people are attempting to put together a proposal to present to the IGDA ( http://www.igda.org ) in order to establish a Detroit/Ann Arbor/Lansing chapter. The IGDA members consist of everyone from students to indie developers to the industry giants. The IGDA tries to promote and further the game industry in a variety of ways. Rather than explain it all here, just visit their web site to get an idea. By establishing a local chapter, we hope to provide game developers in the area, big and small, a chance to get to know each other and to learn from each other. Some meetings may just be informal conversations. Get to know each other. See how other people deal with game development as a hobby or as a career. Share design, business, or algorithm ideas. Other meetings may involve members or guest lecturers speaking on topics of interest to the group, or maybe even demonstrate products and technologies of interest. We are trying our best to get local members of the professional and academic community involved, so it will be a chance for game-developer-wannabes to make some connections that will help them break into the industry. At the very least, it will be an excuse for you to pull yourself away from your computer every now and then and get to interact with real, living, breathing people who share your same interests. In order to establish a chapter, we need to come up with an idea of how many people would be involved and what their interests for such meetings would be. We expect the chapter would meet every other month. We are not yet sure of a meeting location. Ann Arbor would be a logical choice, since it is most centrally located to everyone and is also where the local industry professionals are based. However, we may rotate meetings between the Lansing, Ann Arbor, and Detroit areas. This will also largely depend on where the largest number of interested members are concentrated. If you are located in this area, and the above sounds like something you would be interested in participating in, just give a reply with your location and a few words about yourself. If things work out, we will contact you at a later date to follow up with further details. Ron Frazier
