Fog of war
Im wondering how the graphical fog of war effect is achieved in games such as baldurs gate, which removes the jaggedness of the tiles.
I don''t know, but in some games (Cossacks f.e.) you can select a unit and then move the mouse over the fog and it will change to the attack symbol. Probably a major bug, but I''d think that they just render a layer of black tiles over the map.
One technique is to blit another image on top of the terrain. That image would look like:
101010101
010101010
101010101
010101010
101010101
where 1''s are black and 0''s are transparent. This makes the terrain look like it''s shadowed, and it''s especially nice in high res.

nickm your solution is quite usable but i think most developer uses lighting, in their most recent games, but alpha blending can be a good solution either...
I haven''t seen Bioware''s latest games but for Baldurs Gate the just used images in the shape of black blobs for the unexplored areas and dotted black blobs for the explored but out of range areas. nickm is correct.
