Texture mapped font performance

Hi, i''m implementing a OGL font library and i''m thinking about implementing the submission of the chars quads with a vertex array, it can be fast like nehe''s display lists or not? i want to make the lib much faster, i don''t want it to slow the rendering more of 5-10% of the total time. Can you suggest me a smarter idea?
