Yes.

Supposing I made a multiplayer (LAN and internet 2-4 players) game out of it, would that be valid? I mean, not that I go through all the trouble and then find out "Sorry, we couldn''t find anyone to play it with."
And no, supposing I made it, there wouldn''t be a single player mode. Does that give me a considerable minus? Is there something else I should consider when it''s multiplayer? I mean like does it have to be peer to peer, or is it ok if you have to run a server on one machine (assuming you can also use the game client on that same machine) to play?
While you''re at it answering my questions, could you also say which of my possibilities would cause a definitive minus even if they''re tolerable?
Multiplayer is fine, at least for me. As long as I can connect and play with another person or myself on another machine, it''s fine. If there is anything special, you better tell me.

Can an opensource project be used in the entry? For example, a charactor animation system or does all code have to original? I ask because the source can be included, and proper credit given.
Yes. I just don''t want to see:
void main(){ mygame = new CGame; // CGame is loaded from "closed source" DLL delete mygame;}

Is copyrighted media banned from the contest, or is there a margin for ''fair use'', such as the use of a copyrighted song (or one that is older than a certain margin, like a decade) to provide the correct atmosphere for the demo/game (I''m sure that not everyone who is good at making eye candy is also good at composing original music, and vice versa).
Copyrighted material is up to the contestant. GameDev.net is not going to be using these games/demos for promotional purposes, nor do we plan on using them for some sort of profit. They''ll be available for download from the contest page, and their source code will be included (unless requested otherwise). If anything, we''re losing over $200 US on the prize. Some artists are anal about their work being used in another piece of work, so you may want to go ahead and check with the artist or their license. Again, it''s up to you.
