Efficient motion blur techniques?

I ask this question because I''m just not sure about this subject. I wrote a program that simulates motion blur by using the accumulation buffer, but GOD it''s so slow! I was wondering if you guys had any more practical ideas. I''ve heard of rendering to a texture and mapping it to the background... don''t know much else about it though. I noticed that the Voodoo Lights screen saver does a really good job of it -- anyone know how? Thanks! I''m looking forward to some good responses.
