Why do we need to lock in DX to draw?

Windows is a shared environment. So if you don''t tell DX to lock a surface for you every other Windows program could write to the same memory. You write your bitmap to the screen, some other app overwrites it directly with something else. Doesn''t work huh? That''s the whole reason for locking.
