Simple charecter animation

Im thinking of making an rpg like game with charecters that have removeable armor, swords, etc. I don''t think md2 would be a good answer, or else i would have to make animations for everything. I think my best way to go would to build the body parts seperate and then make a extremly simple ik for the parts that would only know how to translate from one movement to another. Also i was thinking to create these movement in 3dmax as lines and then use those lines as keyframes. So i guess i would have many diffrent animations that could be applied to any humanoid charecter(using some sort of function). An then simce everybody part is seperate i could just place objects(clothing, swords in hand) over them after i call its list for that part. Is this a good idea?
