I just had a brainstorm maybe its stupid but that is why I asked!! So I have this Iso map I want to make so I use d3d to render the entire map with no entities only things that will not move or be destroyed. Basicaly I just do the 3d rendering once then release d3d. Then I would just have call that cuts a little rectangle of that surface out and blits it to the screen based on my position in the map. Then of course I would draw everything on top of this. The reason for doing so would siplified coding, support for those without hw accel, but the obvious disadvantage would be video memory What does everyone think???

If I understand you correctly, you might as well just pre-render the scene to a bitmap and forego d3d completely. Then you can split the bitmap up in system memory and only load the necessary parts to video memory as needed.
