Pathfinding in a vector environment

I am looking to use pathfinding in our Game called Storm (you can see it at All the units, buildings and trees will be positioned on the map given an x,y vector position and not a tile position. Does anybody have any ideas on have to use A* for this problem because most people tent to use it for grids or hex maps. Maybe there is a better algorithm that A* under the circumstances?
