Object to polygon (static level) collision?

I''m making a 3d game using vc6 and opengl and have implented collision with a point and a poly but my object still walks right up to the walls since i''m using just a point. Does anyone have any code to show how to use a bounding sphere collision or something to prevent my character from walking right up to the wall? Thanks in advance, Eric
