RenderState Speed

Can anyone shed their opinions/knowledge about this. I was wondering if anyone knows whether checking if a render state value (Using GetRenderState() method) is already set and leaving it is faster than just going ahead and setting the renderstate regardless. I''m trying to write a RenderState manager which auto-checks a list of render states to see which ones are already set with a particular value or not. Any help would be great. Terren
