Also, I knew that already, but the hard part is to actually create a program which generates a normal map according to a high poly model, removes verts according to the LOD, attaches that normal map to the model, and do it all in real time with dynamic LOD. It''s a project of it''s own, and would not look half as good as it would with displacment mapping.
