this probably is a silly question, but i can''t seem to find an answer... lets say i want 32 bit color depth, i have to set the backbuffer''s color format to either D3DFRMT_A8R8G8B8, or D3DFRMT_X8R8G8B8. My question is this....what would the difforence be? lets say an adapter could support 800 X 600 resolution with both of the above mentioned backbuffer formats, what should i use to make a decision on which one to use? Similary what will the difforence be for the 16 bit backbuffer formats (D3DFRMT_X1R5G5B5, D3DFRMT_A1R5G5B5, D3DFRMT_R5G6B5)

There isn''t really a difference!

One has some bits of alpha, the other still has those bits, but just doesn''t use them.

Unless you *need* destination alpha it shouldn''t affect you either way, just use the Check* calls to find a format supported on your target hardware.
